The Dutch Research Council (NWO) is an important science funding body in the Netherlands realising quality and innovation in science by investing in curiosity-driven research, research related to societal challenges and research infrastructure. It also conducts its own socially relevant research within nine NWO institutes: AMOLF, ARCNL, ASTRON, CWI, DIFFER, Nikhef, NIOZ, NSCR and SRON. These national centres of excellence are breeding grounds for scientific innovation and talent; hubs in national and international research and developers and/or enablers of large infrastructure or datasets.

In March 2022 The NWO governing board has decided to equip a 1 million euros emergency fund to support Ukrainian, Russian and Belarussian co-workers within NWO and to assist the NWO institutes in creating a safe environment for refugee Ukrainian researchers to continue their research.
