Use an authorised taxi
Different taxi companies are available in the big cities. You can recognise them easily by the ‘Taxi’ sign on the roof of the car and the blue number plates. There are permanent taxi stops in many cities (particularly near popular squares, attractions and stations). If you want to take a taxi, make sure you get into an authorised taxi. Every taxi in Holland is required to show a driver’s certificate with photograph upon request. Every taxi must have a licence. In addition, the taxi rates must be clearly visible both in and outside the taxi. Finally, the driver must be able to hand over a printed fare slip at the end of the ride, which should specify data about the ride and the taxi company.

Fares
Always ask about the approximate fare of the ride before you get in the taxi. Make sure the meter starts to run when your ride starts to prevent discussions afterwards. Taxis have a start rate of 7.50 euros, which includes the first two kilometres for a maximum of four persons. The fare consists of the start rate plus the distance and duration of the trip. The rate may vary from €0 to €2.20 per additional kilometre. If you ask a taxi to wait for you, the maximum rate is €33 per hour waited.

Fixed fare
A taxi driver is allowed to offer you a fixed fare. He can also ask a surcharge for additional services, which may include carrying your suitcases. You must agree on the fixed fare or surcharge before the taxi ride starts.

Taxi bus
The maximum rate for a taxi bus ride (five to eight persons) and buses for the disabled is a €12.20 start rate, which includes pick-up and the first two kilometres, plus €0 to €2.52 per additional kilometre. If you ask a taxi bus to wait for you, the maximum rate is €33 per hour waited.

Taxi from the airport
You can easily take a taxi to your destination from any Dutch airport. Follow the taxi signs at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to the regular taxi stand. There are always sufficient taxis waiting to take you to your destination. In addition to regular taxis, electric taxi cabs were introduced on Schiphol at the end of 2014. These electrical taxi cabs by Tesla are not just ecologically sound but offer much space and comfort as well.

Uber taxi
Uber is an alternative taxi service that you can use via an app on your smartphone. The Uber taxi service is available in major Dutch cities but does not yet offer national coverage.
